California State University, Sacramento, more commonly known as Sacramento State, is the seventh largest university of the 23-campus California State University system. Sacramento State offers the prestige of studying at the largest public university system in the United States, while maintaining a personal approach to student teaching.

Sacramento State maintains a multicultural student body of nearly 28,000 students. In addition, over 1,000 students representing many countries from around the world come to the English Language Institute (ELI) each year. The city of Sacramento itself was named America’s most diverse city in TIME Magazine, based on a civil rights project by Harvard University.
ESL program and/or support services
The English Language Institute (ELI) at Sacramento State offers an excellent education on a safe and friendly campus. Our program offers a rich student experience, balancing academics and cultural immersion opportunities.
- Helps students develop the skills necessary to acquire fluency in English as a Second Language
- Introduces students to American culture and society
- Prepares students to communicate effectively in English
- Transitions students from an intensive English program to an academic program
- Provides general English skills for business, travel and educational purposes
- Program offerings include: English Language Institute, American Language and Culture, International Professional Training and Development, and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Preparation.
We also offer internships and volunteer work that help enhance the students’ experience beyond the classroom academically, professionally and personally. Advanced ELI students may enroll in academic courses through Open University.

International Students are those who currently hold or will require F-1 Visas-applying while in the U.S. or abroad to undergraduate and graduate programs. Students are encouraged to apply for their visa early to provide ample time for visa processing. Students may apply for their visa as soon as they are prepared to do so.
