ESL program and/or support services

The English Language Institute (ELI) facilitates the University’s compliance with the state mandate for incoming international teaching assistants (ITAs) to demonstrate competence in oral communication, including those for whom English is not a native language who should demonstrate competence in an oral exam comparable to the written Test of English as a Foreign Language examination, including but not limited to, the Test of Spoken English examination, and demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively before a group.

The English Language Institute (ELI) will eventually offer intensive English programs and English language skills development classes for international students; in this way, their English language skills can be evaluated and strengthened before these students enter the classroom and must compete with native speakers of English. Beginning Summer 2013, international students who have been accepted to UCM as freshmen will be expected to participate in the Summer Bridge Program to get a head start on their studies and adapt to the language and university culture before the rigors of fall semester take hold.

The Conversation Partner Program is a free, volunteer program in which international students and scholars at UC Merced are matched with local members of the UCM community so that they have an opportunity to meet regularly with a native speaker for conversation and perhaps learn a bit about American culture.
